Milia and oil seeds are little skin-coloured lumps commonly found on the face, eye and neck areas. They are formed when skin does not slough off normally but instead remains trapped in a pocket on the surface of the skin. In extreme cases, milia and oil seeds could have been on the face and neck for up to 15 years and it can occur in people of all ages.
Milia can be the bane of your existence. The most common reason for milia is applying skincare products that are too heavy for an individual’s skin type or poor quality products that are not suited for one’s skin can occlude the glands and cause the formation of milia. The formation of milia is also due to sun-induced changes as the skin ages and forms a thicker epidermis and thicker skin makes for more road blocks in the pathway to exfoliation.
Although milia are found in the outer (superficial) layers of skin, they are difficult to remove without the proper tools. Do not try to remove them at home, as you may leave a scar. Seek for medical care from a dermatologist or another physician for evaluation if you notice any new bump on the skin. So if milia are the bane of your existence, don’t worry.
